SAFETY TIPS

How to handle calls for solicitations.

The Mount Arlington Police Department does not solicit for funds. The Mount Arlington Fraternal Order of Police does solicit for funds on behalf of the Union, Lodge #78. Telemarketing firms do make phone calls soliciting funds for various organizations however these solicitations do not benefit the Mount Arlington Police Fraternal Order of Police. While some of these solicitations are for legitimate organizations, they are not related to Mount Arlington FOP. If you decide to contribute to any of these organizations, always ask for the name, address, and telephone number of the organization so that you may call back after careful consideration. If you have a question regarding solicitations, please contact the police department at
973-398-2100.

Identification Scams and Fraud Complaints.

Crimes involving identity theft and fraud are becoming more prevalent as technology progresses.  The increased methods of communication and information access enable the criminal to develop new ways to con others into giving money under false pretenses.  Some common attempts to scam unsuspecting victims is to send letters or emails claiming the victim has won a lottery or drawing, communications which appear to be from a legitimate source such as a bank or the IRS, or phone calls regarding an account or winnings.  The purpose of these is to obtain the victim’s personal or account information.  Some will request information such as social security or bank account numbers and others will request an advance payment to cover the taxes for the winnings.  In any case, do not respond to any form of communication with your personal or account information.  If you do not recall entering a lottery or drawing, or entering into a deal with another, then most likely it is a scam.  If you are not sure if you are being scammed or someone is trying to gain your personal information, contact the police department at 973-398-2100 for assistance.  Remember the old saying, ‘If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is’.

REMINDER:Seat Belts
On May 1, 2000, New Jersey's traffic laws were changed in regard to the wearing of seat belts. The driver of a vehicle can be ticketed for any front-seat occupants who are not wearing their seat belts. An officer can now stop you for that reason alone. The violation involves a $42 fine (no points). BE SAFE! Wear your seat belts.
REMINDER:Wipers on with Headlights
New Jersey Traffic Laws (Title 39, Section 3-47A), now require that headlights must be on when your windshield wipers are on. This provides better visibility during times of precipitation. If stopped and convicted, the fine is $42.
